~ Go back to "In My Life"
In
October 2007, I went on a Jewish Community Workers Israel Seminar. We
spent 4 days in the Galilee Panhandle, a region with which Vancouver has
a sister-city relationship. Also on the tour with me were staff from
other Jewish agencies in Vancouver who work with Seniors. We were
privileged to visit seniors’ residences and activity centres and to meet
with Israeli professionals who also work with seniors.
Israel and Me at 59+ is the name I have given to the slide show of my
trip. Even though after we left the North, we visited many of the usual
places that any tour would visit, my perspective was definitely shaped
by my own disability: arthritic knees. I never noticed before how full
of stairs Israel is!
The generation of the builders of the state of Israel is the same
generation I work with in Vancouver at the Adult Day Centre. I couldn’t
help but think ‘They have built this country and now much of it is
inaccessible to them.” I wish that I could have stayed longer so that I
could explore (at my own pace) Israel’s efforts on accessibility. We did
meet with representatives of Ma’aglei Tzedek, a non-profit organization
whose projects include supporting accessibility in Israel.
I have no slides to put on this website because I used old-fashioned
slide film so that I could prepare a low-tech slide show for my seniors
at L’Chaim. I encourage everyone to create slide shows to show to their
favorite seniors who no longer are able to travel.
